The “3rd International Symposium on New Horizons in Global Communication: From Alphabet to Algorithm,” organized by Bolu Abant İzzet Baysal University (BAİBÜ), was held. On the second day of the symposium, a session on “Digital Aesthetics, Design, and Creativity” was held in the Faculty of Communication. The session, which took place in room Z-124, was moderated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tolga Erkan and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Tuncay Erdem.

The first speaker, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Elif Sabancı Polat, presented her paper titled “From Central Asian Tamgas to Algorithmic Patterns: The Digital Aesthetics of Cultural Codes.” The presentation detailed a research study in which tamgas belonging to Oghuz tribes were selected and reproduced using artificial intelligence tools. Furthermore, the presentation addressed the potential crisis of meaning that could arise from the algorithmic multiplication of symbols in artificial intelligence and generative design processes, and the effects of these processes on cultural memory.

The second speaker was Dr. Öğr. In his presentation titled "The Evolution of Architecture," member Mehmet Ümit Meterelliyoz addressed the visual communication aspect of architecture, five technological eras in architectural representation, and generative artificial intelligence and algorithmic design.

Following this, Dr. Saadettin Demirel gave a presentation titled "From Excel to Algorithms in Data Journalism." In his presentation, Demirel discussed the changes in the thematic focus of data journalism projects over the years, the impact of technological tools used in data journalism production on award-winning outcomes, and the relationship between the geographical origin of projects and the scale of the news center and award success.

The final speaker of the session, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tolga Erkan, in his first presentation titled "Artificial Intelligence and New Ontologies in Design," shared with the audience the transformation process of human creativity and the changes in artificial intelligence and digital aesthetics. The presentation covered the transformation of artificial intelligence into an aesthetic engine today, the expanding concepts of beauty, and the changes in aesthetic understanding.

Following this, Assoc. Prof. Dr. In his presentation titled “Perception as Infrastructure: Rethinking Digital Aesthetics in the Age of Artificial Intelligence,” Tolga Erkan discussed the fundamental dimensions of digital aesthetics in AI-mediated design, its transformation, the main trends that will shape the future, and the opportunities and challenges that AI technologies may present.
