On the second day of the “3rd International Symposium on New Horizons in Global Communication: From Alphabet to Algorithm,” held at Bolu Abant İzzet Baysal University between May 13-15, a session titled “The Future of Global Communication: New Horizons at the Intersection of Digital Culture, Language, and Artificial Intelligence” was held at 13:00 in Room 1005 of the Faculty of Communication.
In the first part of the session, a presentation titled “The Digital Like Economy and Identity Construction: A Discourse Analysis of the Black Mirror Nosedive Episode,” prepared by session moderator Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fatma Akar and graduate student Melek Yalçın, was given. The presentation analyzed scenes from the series, addressing how individuals are evaluated in the digital environment through the concept of status.
In this section, Dilan Köymen also presented her study titled “Normalization of Surveillance in the Context of Social Media: An Examination of Self/Monitoring Practices.” Köymen evaluated the effects of the digital world on individuals through the concepts of social media platforms, digital surveillance, and self-regulation.
In the following presentations, Selin Kıvrak gave a presentation titled “Digital Media Usage Habits and Addiction Levels of Generations X, Y, and Z in Bolu Province,” addressing the differences in digital media usage between generations.
S. Sevgül Kaba Kolyiğit, in her study titled “Artificial Intelligence and Journalism: The Case of Bolu Press,” discussed the impact of artificial intelligence on news production processes and described how journalists in Bolu use artificial intelligence.
In another part of the session, M. Orhan Yalınız and Dr. Öğr. A presentation titled “Algorithmic Agenda: A Qualitative Examination of the X (Twitter) Trend Topic List,” prepared by faculty member M. Rıfkı Ünal, was given. The presentation discussed how the X platform shapes the agenda through algorithms, noting that sports and entertainment content is more dominant, while political and economic content is relegated to the background.
Following this, Lecturer Dr. Laila Mahmoud presented “The Influence of the Arabic Language on the Aleppo Dialect: A Variety of Turkish.” This presentation addressed the migration processes of the Turkmen in Aleppo, the interaction between Arabic and Turkish, and the formation of words used in the Turkmen dialect.
Finally, a presentation titled “New Codes of Visual Communication in the Age of Artificial Intelligence,” prepared by Dr. Lecturer M. Rıfkı Ünal and M. Orhan Yalınız, evaluated how artificial intelligence transforms visual production processes, the changes in the perception of reality in photographs and visuals, and copyright and ethical issues.
Within the scope of the session, Dr. Cihan Oğuz, Assistant Professor, also presented his study titled "Touching the Agenda with Irony: Satirical News Sharing on Zaytung During the BB Investigation Process." Oğuz evaluated the content published by Zaytung about Ekrem İmamoğlu through the concept of satirical news.
In the presentation titled "From SEO to GEO: Digital Visibility in an AI-Based Search Environment," prepared by Research Assistants Mehmet Günesen and Abdulbaki Öztürk, the importance of digital visibility and the effects of artificial intelligence on search engines were discussed.
In Yasemin Asılıskender's research titled "The Use of Artificial Intelligence Tools in the Graphic Design Process: Through the Yönetimcell Digital Assistant," the differences between traditional graphic design and AI-supported design were evaluated, and the development process of the digital assistant named "Mahir" was explained.
In the study titled “Beyond Food Experience: Transmission of Local Gastronomy Heritage through Projection Mapping in Interactive Dining Tables,” prepared by Lecturers Mustafa Berk Geçkalan and Sema Nur Tecimen, the effects of atmosphere, presentation, and environment on taste perception were evaluated.
Oğuzhan Akdeniz's study, “In Search of the Lost Neighborhood: Cultural Transmission and Daily Life in the Gupi Cartoon,” examined the cultural transmission processes of cartoons and their impact on children's education.
Mariam Javakhishvili's research, “Football Hegemony in National Sports Newspapers: A Comparative Analysis of Turkish and Georgian Sports Press,” assessed the differences between the sports press of the two countries.
Following the conclusion of the sessions, Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Feridun Kaya and Dean of the Faculty of Communication Prof. Dr. Emre Tandırlı presented certificates of appreciation and participation. The program concluded with a group photo session.
